mini-sprint distance: 100 yard swim-4.5 mile bike-1.75 mile run
If you've ever thought about doing a triathlon, but aren't sure you're ready for a traditional triathlon distance, or have some limitations and can't do the full distance in one or more of the areas, then we might have the solution to what keeps you from TRI'ing. The Hopkins Royal Triathlon is proud to offer a mini-sprint distance option.
Note: The mini-sprint distance is recommended for those that are new to triathlons, are not skilled in all 3 portions, have physical limitations, don't have a bike that costs more than their first car, don't want to wear a way too revealing wetsuit, etc. It is NOT recommended for veteran triathletes trying to impress people on a short course. Do it because you want to TRI.
How does it work?
It's only a 100 yard swim, a 4 mile bike ride and a 1.75 mile run. BUT, if you want to do the full distance in 1 or 2 of the 3 areas, then go right ahead. You can even decide the day of the race, even as you're doing the race. (Examples: swim 100 yards-bike 12 miles-run 1.75 miles, swim .4 mile-bike 4 miles-run 5K, etc.) Everyone starts and finishes at the same spot, so no one is the wiser except you.
What's in it for you?
For starters, you get to participate in a race within your limitations and ability levels. The race will still be timed for you using a chip, but you just won't compete for performance prizes for the various age group awards. Instead, you'll be eligible for great door prizes, like triathlon gear and gift certificates. Plus, you'll receive a "finisher" medal and a cool t-shirt. Best of all, you'll be called a "triathlete" from then on.
Is the mini-sprint only for those that have never done a triathlon?
No. Don't let the name fool you. The mini-sprint is an option for distance, so no matter if this is your first triathlon, or you've lost count, you can sign up for the mini-sprint distance. And you also have the option of signing up for the regular sprint distance, even if you've never done a triathlon before. (See SPRINT distance for more info)
Note: Anyone under 15 should seek permission from the Race Director prior to registering.
(minimum age is 12 on race day)
